On Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, all Whole Foods Market Miami locations (Aventura, Coral Gables, Downtown Miami, North Miami, Pinecrest, and South Beach) will donate five percent of the day’s net sales to Wellness in the Schools (WITS), a national nonprofit that inspires healthy eating and fitness for kids in public schools.

Newly launched in South Florida, WITS is partnering with Whole Foods Market Miami locations to host a Cooking Lab with WITS Co-founder Nancy Easton and South Florida Chef Ambassador Michael Schwartz at the Coral Gables store. On Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 at 4 p.m., Schwartz will team up with students from Liberty City Elementary to create a Vegetarian Chili using fresh produce and high quality ingredients from the retailer.

In addition, all of Schwartz’s restaurants in The Genuine Hospitality Group will also donate five percent of net sales that day to WITS; including Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink; Harry’s Pizzeria; Cypress Tavern; ella; and Fi’lia by Michael Schwartz. For more information, visit www.thegenuinekitchen.com.

“Whole Foods Market has been instrumental to our success in building our model program in New York City and serving over 50,000 children,” said Nancy Easton, co-founder and executive director of WITS. “We are delighted to grow our program in South Florida with such a like-minded and respected supporter like Whole Foods Market. With Whole Foods Market and local restaurant partners like Michael Schwartz, we have the opportunity to impact over 4,000 children and families in South Florida.”

Through their collaboration with Whole Foods Market, WITS will work with local schools to provide healthy, made-from-scratch meals, active recess periods, and fitness and nutrition education. The partnership approach drives systemic, long-term change, shifting the culture of schools and ultimately fighting the childhood obesity epidemic. In partnership with local departments of education, WITS reaches 50,000 children in over 100 U.S. schools. They currently serve over 3,500 children in four schools in South Florida and will double their reach next year.

“We are thrilled to expand our relationship with Wellness in the Schools to South Florida,” said Lauren Belinsky, Whole Foods Market’s marketing field associate. “We admire what has been accomplished in New York City and look forward to helping make schools healthier and more productive environments for learning here in South Florida.”

During Whole Foods Market’s Five Percent Days, stores donate five percent of the day’s net sales to local educational or nonprofit organizations. About Wellness in the Schools (WITS)
Through public-private partnerships, we work with schools to provide healthy, scratch-cooked meals, active recess periods, and fitness and nutrition education. Trained culinary graduates partner with cafeteria staff to feed kids real food, and fitness coaches encourage schools to let kids play. Our partnership approach drives systemic, long-term change, shifting the entire culture of schools and ultimately fighting the childhood obesity epidemic. WITS started in 2005 in a classroom at PS 225. In partnership with local departments of education, our programs serve more than 50,000 children in 100 schools nationwide. In the past 11 years, we have cooked more than 11 million school meals and led more than 54,000 hours of play. We are continuing to expand our national footprint, helping schools across the country become healthier places for students to learn and grow. Based in New York City, WITS is led by Co-founder and Executive Director Nancy Easton, a former public school principal, and Executive Chef Bill Telepan.
